How to ask for an accommodation

An accommodation is a change that helps you take part on an equal basis. Here is how to ask for one anywhere: work, school, college, health care, or housing.

This page is general information in plain language. It is not legal advice. For help with your own situation, contact one of the free helpers listed on this page.

Five steps

  1. Name the barrier. What is hard, and when?
  2. Name the change that would help. Be specific: "written steps for each task" works better than "more help."
  3. Ask in writing. Keep a copy. Our letter builder writes the letter for you.
  4. Talk it through. They may suggest something else. It is fine to try it if it works for you.
  5. Follow up. If you do not hear back in about two weeks, ask again in writing.

You do not have to share everything

Usually you only need to say that you have a disability and how the change helps. You do not have to share your full diagnosis or medical history.
